Preparing For a Newborn Session
Its time to think about your newborns first photos
This is such an exciting and special time for your family. Whether you are welcoming your first or watching your family grow, those first days are ones you will forever cherish. There are a few tips i’d like to share with you to help your newborn photography session be the absolute best it can be. I take a limited amount of sessions every month so I can give my all to my clients, for this reason, please book 1-3 months (or more!) in advance. I typically photograph baby within the first 2 weeks so please contact me at your earliest convenience after birth to schedule the exact date. Please note that sessions done after 2 weeks are absolutely still possible! If you haven’t booked yet but are interested, click the buttons at the bottom of this page for more info! Check out my tips below to help make your session as successful as it can be!
While I love to take a relaxed and baby led approach to my newborn photography, I do love to get a few sleepy/squishy poses. To do this, I need the baby to be as sleepy as possible. It’s helpful if you keep baby awake for 1-2 hours prior to your session. If baby doesn’t sleep during their session, don’t sweat it. Just like you and me, every baby is different. I am capable of capturing baby in a variety of ways that don’t require sleeping.
Please give baby a full feeding right before heading to the studio. A full baby is a content baby.
Please dress baby in a zip up onesie for easy removal without waking. Have their nails neatly trimmed, clean away flaky skin if possible and eyes cleaned. Keep their diaper secured but not so tight that it leaves marks, if possible.
If your baby is using a pacifier please be sure to bring one.
My studio will be very warm, it helps the baby feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Please dress in layers for your comfort.
In my experience and with my signature style, lighter neutral tones photograph the best. Please consider this when choosing your families wardrobe. I offer a variety of wardrobe options for women and children and I am always available for wardrobe guidance at no extra charge.
Your babies safety and health are of utmost importance to me. Rest assured knowing I wash and/or sanitize everything in between sessions. I will never pose your baby in a way that risks their safety and I follow their cues when it comes to posing. For this reason, I do not guarantee any specific poses, all babies are different.
I will typically do family/sibling shots at the beginning of the session. It’s best to keep noise in the studio to a minimum. For this reason, it’s a good idea to arrange for younger siblings to only stay at the studio during the family portion. If this isn’t possible ( I see you military mamas!) please know that it is perfectly fine for every one to stay the length of the session. I do just ask that you bring toys/tablets/snacks to keep little ones busy. The downtown area of Southern Pines is also just out the door and has a variety of things to keep you busy during the session!
I want your newborn photography session with me to be a relaxing experience. Some babies take a bit longer to settle and that is okay, please don’t stress. I have plenty of experience and limitless patience, your baby is in very good hands.
Expect the session to last anywhere from 1-3 hours
My studio is located in the adorable historic district of downtown Southern Pines, NC. Just a short drive from Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Fort Bragg and Fayetteville.
